Dental Crowns
A dental crown (also called a cap) is a permanent covering that surrounds the original tooth to restore its shape, color, size, and durability. You may be a candidate for a dental crown restoration at our Indianapolis dentist office if your tooth (or teeth) is
- Cracked or broken,
- Misshapen, worn, or severely discolored,
- Lacking original tooth structure due to large fillings,
- In need of a root canal,
- Weak and in need of protection.
We at Ley Dentistry of Indianapolis offer several types of crowns, including porcelain tooth-colored, porcelain fused to metal, or gold crowns. All types of crowns have their advantages and disadvantages, which you can discuss with one of our dentists prior to the procedure. Porcelain (tooth-colored) crowns look and feel just like your original teeth because each dental crown is custom designed for your smile at a dental laboratory. Therefore, this type of is a popular choice.
The entire procedure of placing crowns typically takes two appointments at our Indianapolis office. During those visits, we will take a highly accurate impression of your teeth to send to the lab, clean out any decayed portions of the tooth, prepare the tooth’s surface, and finally fit the permanent dental crown for accurate spacing and bite. Because the dental laboratory takes a week or more to create custom crowns and get them back to our office, we will provide you with temporary dental crowns in between your two appointments.
Crowns are considered a permanent solution to many dental offices because crowns cannot be removed without the assistance of a dentist. However, like most tooth restorations, crowns may eventually need replaced. After permanent crowns are in place, proper care and cleaning of your mouth as well as continuation of your regular visits to our Indianapolis dental office can ensure a longer life for your crowns. Please contact our Indianapolis or Carmel office to schedule a consultation. Our offices serve the Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, and Westfield areas.
